INSURANCE & PAYMENT · NEW ALBANY, OH

Insurance at COVE: what we take, and how we make it simple.

Eyecare insurance confuses almost everyone, partly because there are two completely different kinds: vision plans and medical insurance. Here's exactly what we accept, how to tell which one applies to your visit, and what to do if you don't have a plan at all.

Whatever you have, we check what we can about your specific benefits before your appointment so you know what to expect going in. A benefits check tells us what your plan should cover; final coverage always depends on your plan's terms, your deductible, and how the claim is processed.

01
VISION PLANS

Vision plans we accept.

On the vision side, we accept VSP and EyeMed. Vision plans usually help with a routine eye exam, glasses, and contact lenses, though plans vary a lot in what they include. Some separate the exam from the materials allowance, or cover glasses or contacts but not both. We check the specifics of yours.

If VSP is your plan, COVE is a contracted in-network provider and we carry Unity, VSP's own lens line, alongside Zeiss and other premium options. See exactly how your VSP benefits work at COVE, including the medically-necessary-contact-lens benefit →

To keep things honest: we do not currently accept Spectera/UnitedHealthcare Vision, Davis Vision, or Superior Vision. If that's your plan, you can still see us, and COVE Plus (below) is often the simplest route. Many of these plans also have out-of-network benefits, so you can file a claim yourself for reimbursement, and our team is happy to help with that paperwork if you'd prefer.

We verify what we can about your vision benefit before your visit and explain what it covers, including any copay, so you know what to expect before you're in the chair.

02
MEDICAL

Medical insurance, and why it's different.

Not every eye visit is a "vision" visit. If you're being seen for an eye health concern, a medical condition, or a specific symptom (dry eye, an infection, a sudden change, diabetic eye monitoring, glaucoma, an injury), that's often billed to your medical insurance rather than your vision plan. Whether it's covered depends on your specific plan, the diagnosis, and your deductible and copay, just like any medical visit.

We work with most major medical plans for eye-health visits, including:

  • Anthem
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield
  • Aetna (including Aetna Medicare)
  • Cigna
  • Medicare
  • UnitedHealthcare
  • Humana
  • Medical Mutual
  • Tricare
  • Priority Health

...and many more.

Plans and networks vary, so the best thing to do is call us with your insurance card and we'll confirm your specific plan is one we accept before your visit. Even when we're in-network, some plans (HMOs especially) require a prior authorization or a referral from your primary care doctor first, and we'll let you know if that applies to you.

There's also a helpful option for VSP members. VSP Essential Medical Eyecare is a benefit that can help cover medical eye visits for things like dry eye, pink eye, a sudden change in vision, or monitoring an ongoing condition. It works as secondary coverage alongside your medical insurance, and it can step in when your health plan doesn't cover a medical eye visit, often for a small copay. We check whether your VSP plan includes it.

The short version: a routine "check my prescription" visit usually runs through your vision plan; a "something is wrong with my eye" visit usually runs through medical insurance. We help you sort out which applies and tell you what we can in advance.

SPECIALTY CONTACTS

Specialty contact lenses and insurance.

Specialty contacts (scleral lenses, lenses for keratoconus, hard-to-fit cases) are a common source of insurance confusion. At COVE, medically necessary specialty contact lenses are typically handled through your vision plan's medically necessary contact lens benefit (through VSP or EyeMed) rather than your medical insurance, if your plan includes that benefit and the case qualifies. We check your specific benefit in advance and review expected costs with you before any fitting begins.

HOW WE HELP

How we keep insurance painless.

Insurance is our job to untangle, not yours. Here's how we help.

i.   Before your visit

We check your benefits

We check your specific benefits in advance so you have a clear picture of what your plan is expected to cover before your appointment.

ii.   Vision vs medical

We sort out which applies

We help you figure out which kind of coverage usually applies, vision or medical, so the billing makes sense.

iii.   Costs up front

We explain costs up front

We go over expected costs before your visit where we can, so there are as few surprises as possible. Final amounts can shift once a claim processes.

iv.   Before year-end

We help you use your benefits

Many vision benefits reset on a calendar-year schedule and don't roll over; check your plan's terms. We help you use them before they reset.

Our patients have left us more than 1,100 five-star Google reviews, including comments about how we handle insurance.

Q
QUESTIONS

Common questions.

Q.01 Do you take VSP and EyeMed? +
Yes, both, on the vision side. We're a contracted in-network VSP provider, and we verify your specific benefit before your visit.
Q.02 Do you take my medical insurance? +
Yes. For eye-health visits (things like infections, injuries, dry eye, and diabetic eye exams), we work with most major medical plans, including Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, Medicare, UnitedHealthcare, Humana, Tricare, and many more. Call us at (614) 933-0575 and we'll confirm your specific plan before your visit.
Q.03 What's the difference between vision and medical insurance for my eyes? +
A vision plan usually helps with routine exams, glasses, and contacts. Medical insurance is for visits about an eye health problem or condition. We'll help you sort out which one usually applies to your visit.
Q.04 I don't have vision insurance. Can I still come? +
Absolutely. Ask about COVE Plus, our flat-pricing plan, which includes the exam, refraction, screening photos, a shareable glasses credit, and a discount on a second pair.
Q.05 Do you accept Spectera, Davis, or Superior Vision? +
Not currently. You're still welcome as a patient, and COVE Plus is often the simplest route. Many of these plans also have out-of-network benefits, so you can file a claim yourself for reimbursement, and our team is happy to help with that paperwork if you'd prefer.
Q.06 When do my vision benefits expire? +
Most reset at the end of the calendar year and don't carry over. It's worth using them before then.
Q.07 Will my insurance cover scleral or specialty contacts? +
It depends on your plan and whether your case qualifies. When coverage applies, it typically comes through your vision plan's medically necessary contact lens benefit (VSP or EyeMed), rather than medical insurance. We check your specific benefit and review costs before any fitting.
