To begin with, measurements from devices like Optikam allow us to measure and lay out your lenses incredibly accurately – to a tenth of a millimeter. In the lab, we have a machine called a lensometer that measures prescriptions. We determine the exact center of your personal, prescription lenses and add markings that help us align them to the frame you purchased or dropped off. We have an electronic lensometer that sits on a shelf – our workhorse is the B&L Model 70 Vertometer. This lensometer is built like a tank, is consistently precise and accurate, and allows us to see your prescription clearly with our naked eyes!
The Next Step
At this point, we are either tracing the exact shape of your frame or the lenses that came with it to determine a great many important things about your glasses. Our machine makes a pattern of your lenses and at this point we start to lay out where your prescription fits on your lenses. Once we have everything aligned to our satisfaction, we apply some safety tape and attach blocks to your prescription lenses. This is so they will fit inside the “edger” and stay aligned the way we want.
